Fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAP)
The set of fermentable foods that are poorly absorbed by the body, which may cause intestinal discomfort. They are classified as oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols. These fermentable carbohydrates foods are not digested by the human digestive tract. Thus, this high osmolarity and gas formation by intestinal microbiota eventually trigger symptoms: cramps, belching and fratulências.
This application uses a "traffic light system" to show the tolerance levels that foods with FODMAP that should be consumed:
- Red: high content;
- Yellow: moderate level; and
- Green: low content.
An icon next to the name of the food, is a reference to the item Wikipedia site.
In the menu bar at the top of the application, you can access a tutorial on using the application.
How does diet low in FODMAPs?
- Remove foods FODMAP for 6 to 8 weeks (you can see improvement in symptoms since the first week, but the diet should be continued).
- If there is no improvement of symptoms in 8 weeks, discontinue the diet.
- The diet should be accompanied by a nutritionist to avoid deficiencies of other nutrients.
- After the elimination diet, reintroduce foods FODMAP to assess individual tolerance. The reintroduction may be for specific foods or food groups.
